SPRA Awards Winner 2026 - The Armadillo Esher

8th July 2026

The Armadillo Esher

The latest edition of the SPRA Awards was one to remember, as one of our projects took home the top prize for the second year running. This time, The Armadillo in Esher, Surrey, was recognised with the 'Best Detailing' award, celebrating the craftsmanship behind its unique shell-like design.

The Armadillo also secured second place in the 'Best Small Project' category, while our Seabrook Orchards Care Home project was awarded second place in the 'Best New Build' category, making it another fantastic year at the SPRA Awards for ICB Waterproofing and our approved contractors.

Award-winning detail

Designed as a temporary residence during the construction of the client's new home, The Armadillo has since become a permanent garden annexe that combines striking architecture with exceptional technical performance. Hidden beneath its sculptural cedar-shingle exterior is a waterproofing system that is every bit as complex as the building itself.

The challenge wasn't simply to waterproof the roof. The continuously curved structure demanded a solution that could follow changing radii without compromising performance or altering the architect's vision. Every detail had to be executed with absolute precision, as the waterproofing would remain completely concealed once the cedar shingles were installed.

Underneath the shell

To achieve this, our approved contractor G. Tuffen Roofing installed the alwitra® EVALON® VSK self-adhesive waterproofing system.

Its flexibility allowed the membrane to conform to the building's complex curves while maintaining a continuous, fully bonded waterproofing layer across the entire structure. Unlike more rigid systems, EVALON® VSK adapted to the unique geometry without creasing, bridging, or introducing stress points.

The specification was further enhanced with:

  • ICB STRATAVAP vapour control layer
  • ROCKWOOL Multifix DD insulation
  • ICB SOLAFIX profiles, allowing the cedar battens to be fixed without penetrating the waterproofing layer

Together, these components created a robust roofing system capable of delivering long-term performance while remaining completely hidden beneath the finished exterior.

A true collaborative effort

Projects like this are only possible through close collaboration.

From the earliest design stages, the architect, main contractor, G. Tuffen Roofing and the ICB technical team worked together to develop detailing solutions that preserved both the building's appearance and its long-term weatherproofing performance. Throughout the installation, ICB's Regional Technical Manager, Mick Smith, and Regional Field Technician, Mark Benham, provided technical guidance and on-site support to ensure every detail was delivered to the highest standard.

SPRA Awards 2026

We'd like to congratulate G. Tuffen Roofing on their well-deserved success with The Armadillo and thank everyone involved in delivering these award-winning projects. We look forward to continuing to showcase the exceptional quality of work being carried out across the UK.
