When the opportunity came to submit a project for the SPRA 2025 Awards, we already had our eye on the Millennium Powerhouse and knew that this had the quality to compete for the top prize. Despite our optimism, we knew that with so many exceptional projects taking shape across the country, the competition would be strong. So when we heard our name announced from the stage, it emphasised the hard work and fantastic workmanship of everyone involved.
The Millennium Powerhouse project is a roof refurbishment of a highly valued community facility located in the heart of Moss Side, Manchester. Originally constructed in 2000, the Millennium Powerhouse is a multi-service youth hub operated by the registered charity, Powerhouse, which provides critical support services for young people, including mental health resources, careers advice, NEET programmes and more.
This project involved replacing the original roofing system, which had reached the end of its lifecycle. The original roof used alwitra® EVALASTIC® membrane, and based on its performance over the years, the client and architect selected the advanced alwitra® EVALON® VSK single-ply membrane, supplied by ICB, for the refurbishment. This choice reflects a desire not just for continuity, but for improvement in energy efficiency, weatherproofing, and sustainability standards.
An exceptional standard of workmanship was achieved on the Millennium Powerhouse project through the skilled expertise of D&D Roofing Ltd, supported by rigorous training, effective project oversight, and dedicated on-site collaboration with the system supplier, ICB Waterproofing Ltd.
